I would like to start my blog with a quote of one of the most significant choreographers of our times,
Pina Bausch:
"I am not interested in how people move, but what moves them."
Personally I am moved by the sound of rain pouring down against the window, by the noise you can hear when fingers touch piano keys and sometimes simply by silence. On other days it's my inside that wants to get outside.
So tell me, what moves you to move?

Hello Maria,
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a thought provoking question.
I am often telling my students that dance is a form of free therapy, getting those feelings on the inside to be released through movement.
I absolutely love that quote as well, I will be using that in class for sure.
Looking forward to learning with you!
Hello Charlotte,
Deletewonderful hearing from you and thank you very much for your comment. It's indeed fascinating to experience emotional release through movement.
I am as well very much looking forward to learning with you :-)
Hello Maria,
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful question to help us get to know one another.
Many things move me to move. Music would be the first. Perhaps unoriginal coming from a dancer, but true. Rhythmic sounds or deep beats. Actually, keeping with the Pina Bausch through line...the piece titled Hanz Tuber by Divan Gattamorta, used in the trailer for the film Pina, is a great example of music that makes me want to move. So many layers, I love it. It is a great piece to use as the accompanying music in an improv exercise - when the students pick out just one line, or instrument to follow, be inspired by, and reveal in the physical form.
The second would be the outdoors. Fresh mountain air and sunshine. Sometimes inspires me to move slowly and take deep lazy lungs of mountain air, or fills me with vitality.
Looking forward to reading all the responses.
Take care.
Hello Sheahan,
DeleteI fully agree with you... that particular piece used in the trailer makes me want to move too..it´s fantastic.
Thank you so much for your inspiring answer.
best wishes
Hello Maria,
DeleteI loved that you made that question! You just had me thinking because I do not know exactly what moves me, but I feel the necessity of dance. Probably what moves me is that intense feeling of joy and disconnect from the world while connecting with my inner self.
Hello Paulina,
Deletewonderful hearing from you and thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Being able to disconnect from the world through dancing is a great sensation.
Looking forward to meeting you in the MAPP community :-)
Hello Maria, I am moved by the music my parents listened to as a child. Classical and jazz. It runs deep. It doesn't move me to dance however, it just moves me as a person. That and the smell of mown grass. Thank you for sharing, an important question and reflection.
